Curves Ahead for 2010

The last day of 2009 is filled with hope for change in our visual
culture. Today, V Magazine released a preview of an editorial entitled
“Curves Ahead” for its upcoming spring 2010 issue, dubbed the "Size
Issue." These images do anything but cut the models down
to size; they proudly celebrate the fashion of curves. What is more,
the images keep with a high fashion aesthetic and aspiration that has,
until now, exclusively been reserved for thin models – further
demolishing the myth that models need to be a particular size to be
featured in high fashion.

My hope is that these images will not only rock our foundation by
challenging who we consider beautiful, but it will shift the culture
of the industry decisions makers when developing editorials, creating
campaigns, and casting models. Living in a culture where we are
bombarded by cookie-cutter fashion images, it is difficult for some to
imagine what they would look like with different sized (and aged,
ability, and background) models. We have not had the opportunity to
see these representations in our popular culture. But just as Dove
showed us how beautiful diversity could look in personal care
advertising, V Magazine is showing us how beautiful diversity can look
in fashion editorial. Both are offering us a new way to see. In 2010,
let’s use this lens to celebrate diversity and, most importantly, make
it an every issue occurrence.

It's amazing to see someone who looks even remotely like me in a photo shoot. In March I will be heading out to walk the Appalachian Trail even though some people think I can't because I'm a big girl. Perhaps between us we can challenge their perceptions.
Thank you

Beautiful. I would love to see more pictures like these in mainstream advertising. That would hugely affect my buying decisions in their favor.

Bravo for your blog. I'll be adding it to my blog roll. It is nice to see these women in high fashion editorial. Celebrate diversity, celebrate unity!

It is sad to see that they also have been seriously photoshopped. Just like the skinny models. Just like any models. So what's so real about them? In real life they have cellulite, moles, scars, discoloured skin, imperfections, spots, just like you and me. Their faces certainly aren't that slim - in the pics they look as if the faces have been taken from other people, three sizes smaller. The only difference between the models here and the ones on RL posters is the girls' size. The rest is bull cookies like anywhere else. Get real, girls. Nobody looks like that. The models wish they did.

ps. yeah, go ahead, take it out on me

I'm all for the continued use of healthier women in fashion, but why is it that the issue of body diversity amongst fashion models never seems to include height? The average woman is 5'4", and the average model is 5'10" (taller than the average man). These women still look like Amazons in comparison to shorties like me.

In today's modeling industry, many well-known modeling agencies recognize increased earning potential as they reach out to the plus size population with established divisions that support full figured career models. Today in North America, there are more that 25 modeling divisions or agencies solely representing plus size models. Internationally, established modeling agencies representing full figured models can be found. I'm thinking about calling Lane Bryant, because I have always wanted to model, or be in a beauty pageant. I don't know if this may be a problem, but I don't wear ANY make-up, I don't believe in it. I believe in natural beauty-everyone has it! I am 5'9", and I weigh 160. I am 16, still in high school, carrying a 3.5 gpa, and I do have a job. Hopefully I can pursue this dream of mine! Good luck to all!. http://helpwithmarriage.info

I think as long as the woman has beautiful skin that extra few pounds just makes it more sexy. http://weightloss-in-review.com/cellulite-remover/
